Well Questions, Answered — and How to Reach a Local Company

I have no water. What’s the very first thing to do?

Check the well pump breaker in your electrical panel. It’s the fix surprisingly often. Then work through our No Water Emergency Guide — breaker, pressure switch, tank and gauge, leak check — in that order. If those checks don’t restore water, call for Well Pump Service.

How long do well pumps last?

Typically 8 to 15 years for a submersible pump, depending on water quality, how often the system cycles, and sizing. A pump that short-cycles due to a failed pressure tank will live a shorter life — tank health and pump life are directly connected.

My pump clicks on and off constantly. Is that serious?

Yes — it’s called short cycling, it’s the classic sign of a waterlogged pressure tank, and it wears out both the switch and the pump motor. It’s a “this week” problem, not a “someday” problem. See our Pressure Tanks page.

What does pump replacement cost around Winchester?

Typically $1,000 to $2,500 for a standard residential replacement, depending mainly on well depth, pump size and type, and whether pipe, wire, or the tank also needs attention while the system is open. A firm price requires looking at your specific well.

How often should I test my well water?

Test for coliform bacteria annually. Test more broadly (hardness, iron, pH, nitrates) when you move in, after system work, after flooding or any change in taste, odor, or appearance, and before buying treatment equipment. The Lord Fairfax Health District can point Frederick County homeowners to certified testing.

Does Winchester Well Pump do the work?

No. Winchester Well Pump is an information and referral service owned by Branch and Vine Capital, LLC. We connect homeowners with independent, licensed local well, pump, and water treatment companies, and those companies perform all repair, replacement, and installation work under their own licenses and insurance. We don’t employ technicians, and we don’t set the companies’ prices — quotes come from the company that will do your job.
